Ahem. *tap* *tap*[0] Is this switched on?

It gives me great pleasure to announce that we will be holding
AFPMelbourne1.0, or possibly 3.0, on Saturday April 4th, 1998.

Infrequently Asked Questions[1]

0. What's it's name, really?

Well, it might be Melbourne 3.0 because it's the third one we've had,
or at least the third one I've been to that I know was definitely an
*afp* meet as opposed to a bunch of people getting together after a
signing or something. But then again, it's the first one since people
started using version numbers for meets, so it might be that the other
two I went to were Melbourne 1.0 alpha and beta releases respectively.
I think perhaps we should decide on a name and number when we get
there.

1. Where will it be held?

The meet will be held, in Melbourne, Australia (which is sometimes
known as XXXXia for reasons which need not be explained to you lot).
Hence the subject line that says "Melbourne AFP Meet". Duh.

2. No, where will it *really* be held?

I guess you want to know the venue. Lionel Lauer from ASR tells me
that the Dick Whittington in East St Kilda is a good pub, and since he
took my advice for the ASR meet, I'll take his for this meet. The
address of the pub is:

The Dick Whittington Tavern
32 Chapel Street
St Kilda 3182[2]

Phone 9525-4250 (ask for "alt.fan.pratchett" if you really
*must* get in touch with us. I'll make sure they know who we are.
International callers, that would be: +61 3 9525 4250) I don't know
that I should even be giving this information except that it was in
the phone book when I went looking for the address :)

Map: You'll regret asking, really you will. And Mike will get narky
because it's more than 80 characters. Oh, Alright...

<a href="http://www.whitepages.com.au/cgi-bin/flinders_eg?N=DICK+WHITTINGTON+TAVERN+THE&R=;32;CHAPEL+ST;;ST+KILDA;3182;VIC;&I=2&T=(03)+9525-4250&A=47957">
Map of the area
</a>

And I guess the associated question is: *when* will it be held,
exactly. Well, it'll run from 7pm Saturday April 4th 1998 until it
stops.

3. Who's organizing it?

Well, that'd be me. Skud. You can contact me by emailing
skud@monash.edu.au but I'm afraid I don't have a yuppy phone and I
don't really want to go handing out my home number on Usenet. Email me
if you really need it.

4. Who'll be attending?

Current attendees include:

Yours Truly
Frank Copeland
Rev. Dr. David Gerard
Edward Buckley (Paladin)
Trina Rule
Lionel Lauer and friends, maybe. It's his birfday.

Apologies from Orin, who will be travelling interstate at the time.

All the rest of you, I know you're lurking, so come out now! Tony
Ellis, can you make it down for the weekend?

Those who are attending, please drag along your friends, families,
significant others, insignificant others, etc. The more the merrier,
and all that.

5. Is crash space available?

I can personally offer crash space to a semi-infinite number of
people, but I don't drive and don't live very close to the venue.
Given those limits, if you need a place to stay because you're
travelling from some distance away, email me and we'll see what we can
arrange.

6. Will beer be drank.. drunk.. drunken.. drinked, dammit!

Probably. Not by me, because I don't drink beer, but I believe that
many others do and will. I am awaiting information from Lionel
regarding whether the venue has "real" beer and if so what type. Of
course, bananananana dakries and cider and various other drinks are
equally appropriate if you're not a beer drinker :)

7. Will food be eaten?

Yes. I am assured that the food there is very worthwhile, and that
there are many varieties including a decent range of stuff for
vegetarians.

8. Will CCCBs be ingested?

Only if people bring them along. Following the suggestion made for
another meet, I will provide a small prize for whoever brings the most
original chocolate-coated item. Extra points for afprelevence.

9. Will you be bringing the AFP travel fund tin along?

Me? Damn right I will, or at least the Skud's Trip To Discword Con '98
sub-fund :) I will announce the current exchange rate at the beginning
of the evening so that we know what the going rate is for Monty Python
quotes and bad puns.

10. Will Psions be welcome?

If anyone in Melbourne has one, I'd love to see what all the fuss is
about. However there will doubtless be PalmPilots in evidence. And
handheld computers, too.

11. Will photographs be taken?

Probably. I will bring my camera, if only so that I'm the one *taking*
the photos.

12. Will quotes be taken?

Probably. I will bring my notebook, if only so that I'm the one
recording the quotes.

13. Will bribes be taken?

Yes. For $10 in the travel fund tin you can have your quote stricken
from the record. For $20 I will avoid publishing a photo. For $200 I
will rip the film out on the spot, expose it to the light, then cut it
into small pieces. No IOUs.

14. How will I know who you are?

We'll probably book at table, or at the very least let the staff know
where we are. We might even make a sign if you're lucky.

15. Will there be a real-time linkup with Nottingham's meet?

No. Although they might appear to be happening at the same time, the
world *we* live on is round, and therefore that meet will actually be
happening about 11 hours after ours.[3]

16. Are there any more questions?

I don't know. You tell me. Mail skud@monash.edu.au if there are. I
*should* be checking followups on AFP but I might miss something, so
mail me just to be sure.

See you there!

Skud

[0] No, not you, Andy!
[1] Because we don't have meets here that often

Just a reminder to all XXXXian afpers and friends,

The Melbourne 1.0/3.0 meet will be held THIS COMING SATURDAY, 4th April
1998, at the Dick Whittington Tavern in St Kilda. Details (from the
original post) are as follows:

The Dick Whittington Tavern
32 Chapel Street
St Kilda 3182

Time: 7pm onwards

Attendees so far: lots, I forget the full list. Come and see. Bring your
friends, family, enemies, etc.

Crash space available if necessary, but we're sort of on the other side
of town so unless you're from *miles* away it probably won't help much.

Food is available at the pub; BYO choc-coated thingies (teehee, I have
*plans*), soft toys, pratchettian paraphernalia, etc.

How to spot us: I'll make a big sign that says "AFP" and will
furthermore inform the bar staff of our whereabouts.

Mail me for more info, RSVP, whatever.

Skud
