From the Stables Theatre newsletter StageWrite:
This summer a joint venture between the Stables Theatre and Helenswood School (Specialist School for the Performing Arts) means that a Summer Youth Theatre will be open to all students from the age of 14 to 18 who are from the Hastings area. The aim of the project is to give students the experience of rehearsing and performing in a professional theatre. The end result will be four performances at the Stables on Thursday 11th to Sunday 14th September.
The production will be an adaptation of Terry Pratchett's "Discworld" novel Carpe Jugulum: a very funny, fast-moving and ingenious fantasy which demands about twenty enthusiastic actors and stage crew to bring it to life.
Starting with a workshop on 17th July, there will be rehearsals in late July followed by intensive work every day between 26th August and 11th September.
The project will be co-directed by Maureen Nelson, who has responsibility at the Stables for education work, and Chris Lacey, Chairman of the Council of Management and Deputy Head at Helenswood. Frank and Gill Jenks are responsible for the technical side.
However, most of the work and ideas will come from the students themselves; indeed, as StageWrite goes to press, both the poster and other publicity is being devised by two of the students.
Unlike many other projects there is no fee - we are using the model of the National Youth Theatre to guide us. Both school and theatre hope that a tradition of youth theatre can be established at the Stables and be maintained in the years to come. So far the young people seem ready forthe challenge!
